Setting up your Laptop for School 

This information is specifically for students  who are using a laptop as part of the BYOT program in Years 7 - 12 at St Peters Lutheran College Springfield. 

This page provides information to new and continuing students on tasks such as:

  • Changing your password
  • Installing Microsoft Office
  • Downloading and logging into the Chrome browser
  • Logging in to Firefly

Checklist for initial laptop set up

As you complete each task, click on the checkbox and then save progress.

Your St Peters Username and Password

  • Your Parents will receive your initial username and password via email. The email includes a link to reset your password. 
  • You can change your password using the Password Reset option.

Tips for a strong password:

  • 8 characters
  • Capitals and lower cases letters
  • A number and special character
  • Not your name, not your birthday or something people who know you could easily guess.
  • Keep it simple - so you can remember

Microsoft Office 365 and Webmail

Microsoft Office 365 software is provided to students under the College’s Microsoft Licensing Agreement. This will provide you access to Windows or Apple Mac OS X versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and other useful programs. You also have access to your College email through Webmail, this is also the easiest way to log into your St Peters Office 365 account to download and install Microsoft Office.

  • Visit - https://webmail.stpeters.qld.edu.au.
  • Log in using your St Peters email address  and password- For example: 12345@stpeters.qld.edu.au and <yourpassword>.
  • In the top left of the screen, Click 'Office 365'.


  • You will see icons for the online versions of various Microsoft tools. 
  • Locate and Click - 'Install Office 2016' 
  • Save and Run the installation file.

During and after installation if prompted for your Microsoft Account use your St Peters email address and password. The version of Microsoft Office installed will automatically be activated as part of the College's Microsoft Licensing Agreement.

Download and Install Google Chrome

Your St Peters username is also a Google account. St Peters uses a various Google applications which you will log into using your St Peters user account. Signing in to Google Chrome with your St  Peters account will make many things easier and faster. You can use more than one account in Google Chrome, so when you are at home you can easily switch back to your personal one if you choose.

Set up Recommended Chrome Settings

To sign into your Google Chrome with your St Peters account:

  • Open Google Chrome using the icon on your Desktop, Taskbar, Start Menu or Dock 

If you haven't signed into Google Chrome previously...

  • When Chrome first launches it will ask you to sign in.
  • Enter your St Peters Email Address (EG. 12345@stpeters.qld.edu.au) and Password.

  • You will also need to log in via the St Peters authentication system to verify your College log in details. In this box you only need your Username and Password instead of the complete email address. (EG. 12345)

  • Click Link Data when the following pop up is displayed.

If you have signed into Google Chrome previously...

  • At the top right, click the button with your name or People People.
  • Click Manage people.
  • Click Add person.
  • Choose a photo and a name. YourName@StPeters might be a good idea.
  • Click Save. A new window will open and ask you to sign in.
  • Sign in to Chrome with your St Peters email address and Link account as shown above.

NOTE: St Peters does not currently use Gmail for email... use webmail.stpeters.qld.edu.au

My St Peters Portal

  • Visit - https://mystpeters.com
  • Log in using your St Peters username (student number) and password.
  • Add a bookmark for mystpeters.com.

Logging into Firefly

Firefly is the Learning Management System used at the College. This is where  you will find a variety of useful resources. For example, your class content, online tests and activities...and even your timetable!

  • You can find Firefly via www.mystpeters.com or you can visit it directly by visiting http://stpeters.fireflycloud.net.au
  • Sign in using the 'SAML' option on the right.
  • If you are already logged in to mystpeters.com or into Google Chrome you may not be asked to log in again and will be taken next to the Firefly home page. If not, you will be asked to login to St Peters as shown earlier.

Once logged into Firefly you should see your Dashboard which looks like this.

Printing - Papercut

Test if the Papercut printing software is installed by

1. Opening a document, 2. pressing Control-P, 3. Select Printer

NB. Ask for help if Papercut is not already installed

Other Recommended and Required Software

Through licensing arrangements, St Peters is able to provide a selection of specialist software to be installed on student machines. 

Some of these applications are for specific subjects only (eg Science, Music, etc), your teachers will provide more details on which ones you will require and the IT Help Desk can also provide assistance with locating and installing these.

These are some of the commonly required applications:

  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Logger Pro
  • Sibelius (music only)
  • Autodesk
  • Google Drive File Stream (Sync tool and editors for Sheets, Slides and Docs)
  • Other common plugins and media players - Flash Player, Quicktime , Java, VLC.
